Büren lies in the Paderborn district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the edge of the Sauerland uplands, where the Alme and Afte rivers meet. The historic centre is compact and sits on higher ground above the valley. From above, its lanes gather around the church and market area before giving way to newer districts and the villages that make up the wider town.
The skyline is marked by the Baroque Jesuit church of Maria Immaculata. Within the municipality stands Wewelsburg, a triangular hilltop castle above the Alme valley, which today houses a museum and a memorial documenting its use by the SS. Paderborn Lippstadt Airport also lies within Büren's boundaries, its runway a clean straight stroke across the plateau.
