Recklinghausen marks the point where the dense Ruhr gives way to the flatter, greener country of the Vest. On a map, the old town stands out immediately. It is a small, nearly round core held inside a ring road that follows the line of the medieval walls. Narrow streets run from its market place towards the old gates.
Outside the ring, the city spreads in suburbs, former colliery settlements and parks. To the south, the Rhine–Herne Canal and the Emscher cut a firm line across the plan. Recklinghausen is known for the Ruhrfestspiele theatre festival and for its icon museum, one of the most significant collections of its kind outside the Orthodox world.
