Essen spreads across the heart of the Ruhr, and its map runs from industry to water. In the north, the Rhine–Herne Canal and railway lines cross a landscape of former collieries. The centre is compact, with a pedestrian core around the minster. To the south the land becomes greener and hillier until it reaches the Ruhr River and the long reservoir of the Baldeneysee.
The city grew on coal and steel, and the Krupp family's firm made it one of Germany's industrial centres. Its most famous site today is the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its Bauhaus-inspired winding tower. In 2017 Essen was named European Green Capital, reflecting how much former industrial land has turned into parks.
