Solingen lies in the Bergisches Land of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Düsseldorf, Cologne and Wuppertal. Rather than a single centre, the map shows a city formed from several older towns merged in 1929, including Ohligs, Wald, Gräfrath and Höhscheid, spread across ridges and valleys. Streets follow the lines of the hills, and patches of woodland reach deep into the urban area.
Known as the City of Blades, Solingen has made knives, scissors and swords for centuries, and its name is legally protected as a mark of origin for cutlery. The Wupper River cuts a deep, wooded valley along the edge of the city, one of the most striking natural features on the map and a clear boundary with its neighbours.
Over this valley stands the Müngsten Bridge, Germany's highest railway bridge, completed in 1897, and a few kilometres away Schloss Burg, the restored castle of the counts of Berg, looks down over the river. Müngsten Bridge
The steel arch railway bridge, opened in 1897, spans the Wupper between Solingen and Remscheid, and on the map the rail line leaps the valley in a single long stroke.
Merged districts
