Burē lies in the West Gojjam highlands of the Amhara Region. The town has grown along the main road north toward Bahir Dar. On a map its streets branch from that spine into residential blocks and then give way to farmland. Small streams and field paths cross the plateau.
The town is a trading centre for a productive farming district. In recent years it has been chosen as the site of an agro-industrial park meant to process crops from the surrounding area. That adds larger planned plots to the edges of the older settlement.
