Cabrero lies in the Biobío Region of central Chile, on the flat central valley between the coast range and the Andes. The town grew around the railway, and from above its streets form a fairly regular grid, with the rail line cutting a clear diagonal through the built-up area.
The Pan-American Highway runs past the town, placing Cabrero on the main north-south corridor of the country.
