Caeté is in Minas Gerais, a short distance east of Belo Horizonte, in hilly country shaped by the region's mining history. The map shows streets that follow the terrain: a small historic core in the valley and later neighbourhoods spreading up the slopes along winding roads. To the north rises the ridge of Serra da Piedade, a long, steep mountain line that dominates the surroundings.
The town grew out of the gold rush of the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and colonial churches still stand in the centre. At the top of Serra da Piedade is the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, patron saint of Minas Gerais. It is a place of pilgrimage and has wide views across the region.
