Cala is a small town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, in the uplands of the former Transkei. The landscape here is high, open grassland rising towards the foothills of the southern Drakensberg, with rounded hills and deep valleys. The town serves as a local centre for the many rural villages scattered across the surrounding hills.
The street plan of the town itself is compact, with a small commercial centre and residential areas spreading outward. Beyond it, the settlement pattern changes completely. Homesteads are dispersed across the slopes in small clusters, connected by gravel roads and footpaths, with streams running through the valleys between them.
