Calais sits on the northern coast of France, close to where the Strait of Dover is at its narrowest and the white cliffs of England can be seen on a clear day. Its map is dominated by water: harbour basins and docks along the sea front, canals threading through the town, and flat reclaimed land stretching inland behind the dunes.
For centuries the town has been a gateway between France and Britain, and it was an English possession from 1347 until 1558. The Burghers of Calais, Rodin's sculpture of six citizens who offered their lives during the siege of 1346–47, stands before the town hall and its tall belfry. Ferries and the nearby Channel Tunnel keep Calais one of Europe's busiest crossing points.
