Calne is a market town in Wiltshire, in the valley of the River Marden. Its prosperity came from the wool trade, and later from bacon: the Harris factory dominated the centre for much of the twentieth century. Nearby Bowood House is where Joseph Priestley carried out his experiments that identified oxygen in 1774. The Cherhill White Horse is cut into the chalk hills to the east.
On a map, the old centre follows the river. Streets curve around the Green and the parish church, and the town's main road winds through it. Where the factory once stood, newer streets and open spaces have replaced it. Housing estates spread out on the higher ground around the valley. To the west, the parkland of Bowood forms a large, open green area.
