Caluire-et-Cuire occupies the heights just north of Lyon's Croix-Rousse hill, on a tongue of land between two rivers. The Saône runs along its western edge and the Rhône bends past to the east. On a map, the commune looks like a raised plateau with steep slopes on both sides. Winding roads and stairways link the quays below to the residential streets above.
The commune is known in French history as the place where Jean Moulin, leader of the unified Resistance, was arrested in June 1943 at a doctor's house. Today it is a largely residential town. Villas and gardens sit alongside apartment blocks, and across the Rhône the large green shape of Lyon's Parc de la Tête d'Or appears at the edge of the frame.

Roads climb from the riverside quays to the plateau in bends and loops. On the poster they appear as a looser, more organic line pattern than the grids below.

The broad open shape of the Parc de la Tête d'Or lies just across the river. It gives the composition a large pale area that balances the denser streets.
