Campanha lies in the south of Minas Gerais, in the rolling hill country known as Sul de Minas. It is one of the oldest towns in the region, founded in the eighteenth century during the gold era. On a map, its historic centre is a tight, irregular web of streets that bends over the hills. Newer neighbourhoods spread out along the roads and slopes around it.
The town's layout reflects its colonial origins. Streets follow ridges and valleys rather than a strict grid, and churches and squares mark the high points of the old centre. Campanha is also the seat of a Catholic diocese, which gives it a strong religious heritage. Farms, including coffee plantations typical of southern Minas, surround the urban area.
