Campos dos Goytacazes lies in northern Rio de Janeiro state, on the lower course of the Paraíba do Sul. It is the largest municipality in the state by area. From above, the city is spread over flat, low land. The river runs in a wide curve along the edge of the centre, and bridges connect the main city to the settlements on the opposite bank.
The historic core faces the river in a grid of squares and straight streets. The city grew outward from there, first as the centre of a sugar-producing plain and later as a regional capital. Beyond the edge of town, the land stretches toward the coast in a mosaic of fields, canals and lagoons. The Campos Basin, the offshore oil region, takes its name from the city.
