Macaé lies on the Atlantic coast of Rio de Janeiro state, about 180 kilometres northeast of the city of Rio. The urban area follows the shoreline as a long strip, with beaches on one side and lagoons, wetlands and low hills inland. The Macaé River reaches the sea near the centre, dividing the city into northern and southern sections joined by bridges.
Since the 1970s Macaé has been the onshore base for the offshore oil fields of the Campos Basin, and Petrobras facilities, supply terminals and heliports are part of the city's layout. That growth has turned what was a fishing town into a sprawling city of new neighbourhoods and wide avenues along the coast.
