Canudos sits in the dry sertão of northern Bahia, surrounded by caatinga scrub and low hills. Its name is closely tied to Brazilian history: the settlement founded by the preacher Antônio Conselheiro was destroyed in the War of Canudos in 1896 and 1897, a conflict made famous by Euclides da Cunha's book Os Sertões.
The map shows an unusual layer of that history. The original site was later flooded by the Cocorobó reservoir, and the present town was built nearby. From above, the reservoir is a wide, irregular body of water with branching inlets reaching into the dry land, and the modern streets form a modest grid beside it. A Canudos map poster sets that water against the plain lines of the town.
Beyond the town, roads and tracks cross open, sparsely settled country, and the lack of dense development makes the reservoir the dominant shape on the sheet. The area around the old site is protected as a state park that marks the war. It is a small place with a large place in Brazilian memory, and the map reflects that without adding clutter.
