Capela lies in the interior of Sergipe, north of Aracaju, in a region long shaped by sugarcane. From above, the town is compact: an older core of irregular streets around its churches and squares, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods laid out in straighter blocks. Beyond the last houses the land breaks into large cane fields and patches of remaining native forest.
The town is known in the region for its June festivities, especially the Festa do Mastro, when a tall mast is carried into town. On a map the festival itself is invisible, but the streets it fills are there: short, slightly winding lanes of the older centre, opening onto small squares where the town gathers.
