Çatalca is the administrative centre of Istanbul's largest and most rural district, and from above it looks nothing like the dense city to the east. The town lies in a shallow valley among low, rolling hills. Its modest centre is where a few main roads meet, and the neighbourhoods thin out quickly into farmland, pasture and patches of woodland.
The district covers much of the land between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. In the early twentieth century the Çatalca Lines, a chain of defensive fortifications, were built across this narrow neck of land to protect Istanbul. During the Balkan Wars, the advance on the city was stopped at these lines, and that history is written into the local geography of hills and approaches.

Several regional routes meet in the town, so the core appears as a small knot of crossing lines. The outer streets and rural roads spread out from it.
Countryside all around
