Centenario lies in the province of Neuquén in northern Patagonia, on the western bank of the Neuquén River a short distance upstream of the provincial capital. From above, the town's grid of streets sits on the flat river valley. Irrigated farmland and the river lie on one side, and the bare slopes of the plateau rise on the other.
The town belongs to the Alto Valle, the irrigated valley of the Neuquén and Negro rivers known for its apples and pears. Orchards here are divided by long rows of poplars planted as windbreaks, which appear on the map as fine parallel lines. In recent decades the town has grown with the Neuquén metropolitan area and the regional oil and gas industry.
