Cernusco sul Naviglio lies on the plain east of Milan, and its name tells you what defines it on a map: the Naviglio della Martesana, a historic canal that runs through the town in a long, calm line. The water gives the plan a clear spine, with the older centre gathered close to its banks and newer districts spreading north and south.
Around the canal the streets form a dense, irregular core that reflects the town's older layout, with villas and gardens occupying larger plots. Further out the pattern becomes more regular, with residential blocks, sports grounds and industrial zones, until the fields of the Lombard plain begin to show between Cernusco and its neighbours.
