Changba lies in the rural part of Chongqing Municipality, well away from the dense river peninsula of central Chongqing. The region is known for folded hills and deep valleys, and settlements here tend to follow whatever level ground the land allows. From above, the result is an irregular town plan rather than a grid, with streets running along the natural lines of the landscape.
Mountains, the Yangtze and its tributaries define the wider municipality. Small towns like Changba sit inside that network of ridges, terraces and winding roads. On a map it shows as curving links between clusters of buildings, roads that switch back to reach higher ground and fields fitted into the gaps between slopes. The pattern is compact, but it rarely runs straight.
