Fuling stands at the confluence of the Wu River and the Yangtze, downstream from central Chongqing. On a map the two rivers dominate. The Yangtze sweeps past in a broad band, and the Wu cuts in from the south to meet it. The city climbs the hills above both, so its streets are forced into curving terraces and switchbacks that follow the slopes.
Fuling gave its name to zhacai, the pickled mustard tuber that is a staple across China. The city is also home to Baiheliang, the White Crane Ridge, a stone ridge carved with centuries of low-water marks and inscriptions. It is now submerged by the Three Gorges reservoir and can be seen through an underwater museum.
