Nanbin is the seat of Shizhu, a Tujia autonomous county in the mountainous east of Chongqing municipality. The land here is steep and deeply folded, and the town has grown in one of the few places where a valley widens enough to build on. On the map the streets form a long, narrow band that follows the valley floor.
A river runs through the valley, and the main roads keep close to it. Where the slopes begin, the streets turn into switchbacks and short winding lanes, and the built-up area thins out quickly. Newer districts have been built wherever flatter ground allows, so the town appears as a series of connected clusters rather than one solid block.
