Châtellerault lies on the Vienne river in western France, north of Poitiers. The river runs through the town from south to north, and the map is organised around it. The historic centre sits on the right bank, in a web of streets inside the line of its former walls. Across the water, the left bank grew up around industry.
The Pont Henri-IV, completed in the early seventeenth century, still links the two sides, guarded by a pair of towers at one end. Downstream stands the former Manufacture d'armes, a national arms factory that operated from the nineteenth century until the late 1960s. Its long buildings and canal now house a museum and cultural spaces.
A Châtellerault map poster traces how the Vienne shaped the town: old streets on one bank, industrial heritage on the other and bridges tying them together. The family of René Descartes also had a home here. On paper, the curve of the river and the dense centre form a clear, balanced composition.

The former arms works occupies a long site by the river on the left bank. Its large, orderly buildings contrast with the irregular streets of the old town.
The Vienne
The river runs through the middle of the map and divides Châtellerault in two. In monochrome it forms a strong, calm band across the whole print.
