Chegutu lies in Mashonaland West, southwest of Harare, on the main road and railway that link the capital with Bulawayo. It was known as Hartley during the colonial period and took its current name in the early 1980s. On the map, the town is a modest grid of streets aligned along these transport routes, with residential areas spreading to either side.
The Mupfure River flows near the town, its winding course a soft contrast to the straight lines of the road and railway. The surrounding land is farming country, and beyond the built-up area the map opens into large fields and scattered homesteads, crossed by a few long rural roads that run toward neighbouring towns and farms.
