Chimoio is the capital of Manica Province in central Mozambique, set on higher ground between the coast at Beira and the Zimbabwean border. From above, its structure is simple: a central grid of streets inherited from the colonial town, with the main road and the railway running east to west through or beside it.
The town was called Vila Pery during the colonial period and took the name Chimoio after independence. Close by is Cabeça do Velho, a large granite outcrop whose profile is said to resemble an old man's head, one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area.
A Chimoio map poster reflects a town defined by its route. The corridor road and railway make a strong horizontal axis, the regular blocks of the centre sit along it, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward with less regular streets onto the surrounding farmland.
