Quelimane, the capital of Mozambique's Zambezia province, lies on the north bank of the Rio dos Bons Sinais, some distance upstream from the Indian Ocean. The land is almost completely flat and close to sea level, and on a map the town appears as a grid of streets set against a broad tidal river, with mangrove creeks and wetlands on its margins.
The river gives the town its most famous story. Vasco da Gama stopped here in 1498 on his first voyage to India and named it the River of Good Signs, taking the news he heard as a sign that India was near. Later a Portuguese trading post and then a colonial port grew on the riverbank.
Quelimane is known for its bicycle taxis, which carry passengers along the level streets, and for the coconut plantations that surround the town. The older centre near the waterfront follows a regular grid of blocks, clearly distinguishable from the looser, more irregular neighbourhoods further inland.

Small tidal channels and wetlands wind through the edges of the town, creating fine, branching lines where land and water are hard to separate.
