Nampula is the capital of Nampula Province and one of the largest cities in Mozambique. It sits well inland from the Indian Ocean on a plateau dotted with dramatic granite inselbergs. From above, the city appears as a compact planned centre surrounded by much larger areas of informal neighbourhoods that stretch in every direction.
The centre follows a regular layout with wide avenues, a cathedral and administrative buildings, a legacy of the colonial-era town it grew from. Beyond it, the map shifts sharply: dense, irregular clusters of homes spread outward along paths and minor roads, forming a fine texture that covers most of the urban area.
