Chełm lies in the Lublin region of eastern Poland, close to the border with Ukraine. The town's defining feature is a low chalk hill crowned by a basilica and bell tower, from which the old centre spreads downward. On a map, the older streets bend around the rise, while later districts form more regular grids on the flatter ground beyond.
Beneath the old town runs something no street map can show directly: a network of chalk tunnels dug over centuries of mining. Part of it is now open to visitors as the Chełm Chalk Underground, one of the more unusual attractions in the country. Above ground, the small Uherka river and the railway lines trace their own paths through the outskirts.
