Chelyabinsk lies on the eastern slope of the Ural Mountains, where the land flattens towards Siberia. The Miass River runs through the centre from west to east, and the city is surrounded by water: the large Shershnevskoye Reservoir to the south-west, Lake Smolino to the south-east and other lakes to the north. On the map these bodies of water frame the street network on several sides.
The city expanded rapidly in the twentieth century as a centre of heavy industry. During the Second World War, the tractor plant made tanks on such a scale that Chelyabinsk became known as Tankograd. In February 2013, a meteor exploded over the region, and fragments later fell into nearby Lake Chebarkul.
