Tyumen grew up on the banks of the Tura, and the river still decides how the city reads from above. It swings through in broad curves, with the historic centre on its high right bank and newer districts running away from the water in long, regular blocks. Floodplain and low wooded ground break up the outer edges, so the city's outline looks irregular and organic.
Founded in 1586, Tyumen is generally described as the first Russian town in Siberia. That early fort gave way to churches, merchant houses and a monastery above the river bend. In the twentieth century the city became an administrative base for the West Siberian oil and gas fields, and that growth shows on the map as large residential districts, rail lines and industrial zones.
A Tyumen map poster keeps all of this in plain black lines. The narrow, irregular streets near the riverbank give way to the looser geometry of Soviet-era planning, and the Tura's meanders cut across the whole sheet. Bridges link the two banks at a few points, and the thin line of the embankment picks out the oldest part of the city.
