Khanty-Mansiysk sits on the Irtysh River near its confluence with the Ob, one of the great river junctions of western Siberia. The city occupies a strip of land between the river's floodplain and a line of wooded hills. From above, the streets follow the terrain. They run along the base of the slopes and climb into the valleys between ridges instead of forming a flat grid.
The floodplain around the city is a maze of channels, oxbow lakes and marshes that change with the seasons. On the Khanty-Mansiysk map poster this watery land takes up much of the frame and contrasts with the compact built-up area on higher ground. Forest covers the hills in the background, so the edges of the city are soft.
The city is the administrative centre of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, one of Russia's main oil-producing regions. It grew out of the older settlement of Samarovo. It is also well known in winter sports and has hosted biathlon World Cup races and world championships at its purpose-built biathlon centre.
