Chrysi lies in the Libyan Sea about fifteen kilometres south of Ierapetra, off the southeastern coast of Crete. It is long, low and uninhabited, with no villages and hardly any buildings. From above it forms a clean elongated shape with a flat interior of sand and rock, surrounded by clear shallow water.
The island is protected for its natural value, especially its stands of old cedar junipers growing directly on the sand dunes, one of the largest such forests in Europe. In summer, boats from Ierapetra land visitors at a small pier, and marked paths lead across the island to the beaches on the other side.
The name means golden, and much of the coast is pale sand and shell fragments. A Chrysi map poster is almost pure geography, with the island's outline, a few paths and the small islet of Mikronisi nearby, set in open sea south of Crete.

Marked trails run from the landing area on the north side to the beaches on the south. They are the only real lines drawn across the island's flat surface.
