Dia lies in the Sea of Crete a short distance north of Heraklion and is clearly visible from the city's waterfront. From above it is an elongated, rocky island running east to west. The northern shore is smooth, while the southern coast is cut into several deep bays. There are no roads or towns, and the interior is bare, sun-baked hillside.
The southern bays have offered sheltered anchorage since antiquity, and underwater surveys have found traces of ancient harbour use there. Today the island is uninhabited and protected as a wildlife refuge. It is especially important for the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat, which was introduced here to help protect the species.
