Chūō Map Poster & Print
Chūō lies in Yamanashi Prefecture, on the southwestern side of the Kofu Basin, west of Mount Fuji. The city was created in 2006 by merging several towns and a village, and its name simply means centre. From above, the northern part occupies the flat floor of the basin, with rivers crossing it, while the south climbs into the forested mountains that close the basin in.
The basin is famous for fruit growing, and much of the map around the town centres is taken up by orchards and small farm plots divided by lanes. Built-up areas are scattered rather than concentrated, reflecting the several communities that make up the city. A university medical campus is among the larger institutional sites.
A Chūō map poster shows that loose, distributed pattern clearly: clusters of streets on the basin floor, rivers running across it, and roads that thin out into mountain valleys. In black and white, the fine texture of farmland lanes contrasts with the empty space of the hills. It suits anyone connected to this quiet part of Yamanashi.

Rivers across the basin
Rivers flow across the city toward the centre of the basin, drawing long lines that separate neighbourhoods and link the mountains with the plain.
Mountain edges
To the south, roads narrow and wind into forested hills, leaving large open areas on the map and showing where the basin gives way to mountains.
