Numazu stretches along the northern shore of Suruga Bay where the Izu Peninsula begins. On a map, the coastline defines everything: a smooth curve of shore to the west, a working harbour near the river mouth, and a more rugged, indented coast heading south toward Izu.
The Kano River flows through the city centre and into the bay, dividing the streets into two halves joined by bridges. Along the western shore, the Senbonmatsubara pine grove forms a long strip that separates the town from the sea.
