Costa Mesa sits on a mesa in Orange County, California, just inland from Newport Beach. On a map, the city is a patchwork of suburban grids and cul-de-sacs, divided by wide arterial boulevards and crossed by two major freeways, the 405 and the 55. The Santa Ana River runs along its western edge in a straight channel toward the ocean.
The city calls itself the City of the Arts, and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, together with South Coast Plaza, one of the largest shopping centres in the United States, forms a dense cluster in the north of the city near the freeway.
