Cotabato City sits near the mouth of the Rio Grande de Mindanao, the island's largest river system. From above, water defines the place. The river winds through the city, dividing into channels and creeks as it approaches Illana Bay on the Moro Gulf. Neighbourhoods fill the land between these waterways, and low, marshy ground surrounds the urban area.
The city is the seat of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. A small rise known as PC Hill overlooks the centre and is one of the few high points in the flat delta. On the southern outskirts, the Grand Mosque with its golden domes stands near the water and is one of the largest mosques in the Philippines.
