Cottonwood Heights lies on the southeastern edge of the Salt Lake Valley, where the flat valley floor gives way abruptly to the Wasatch Range. The city was incorporated only in 2005, but many of its streets are older. They form a patchwork of mid-century subdivisions and newer cul-de-sacs laid over the benches that rise toward the mountains.
On a map, the western half follows the valley's broad grid, with long arterials and regular blocks. Toward the east the pattern loosens: streets curve with the slope, dead-end loops multiply, and then everything stops at the mountain front. Big Cottonwood Canyon opens here, and the road up it leads to the ski areas that bring visitors through the city each winter.
