Coxim stands in northern Mato Grosso do Sul at the meeting of two rivers, the Taquari and the Coxim, close to where the uplands of central Brazil drop toward the Pantanal. The rivers give the town its shape: streets extend back from the banks, and the water forms the clearest, most organic lines on the map, curving through a grid that is otherwise fairly regular.
The Taquari is one of the rivers that feed the Pantanal wetlands, and Coxim has long been associated with river fishing and with the piracema, the season when fish swim upstream to spawn. Around the town the land alternates between pasture and patches of cerrado, and the BR-163 highway passes through, connecting Coxim with Campo Grande to the south and Mato Grosso to the north.
From above, the confluence is the natural focal point, with bridges tying the neighbourhoods on either side together.
