Csongrád lies on the Great Hungarian Plain, on the right bank of the Tisza, near where the Körös flows into it. On the map, water shapes much of the town: the wide curve of the Tisza, the mouth of the Körös, backwaters and flood embankments. The streets sit on higher ground a little back from the river.
The town is known for its Belváros, the old fishermen's quarter near the river, with low whitewashed houses and thatched roofs along narrow lanes. Some are protected as folk architecture. Near the confluence, the Körös-torok beach draws crowds in summer. Beyond the town, flat farmland stretches out with the long, straight roads typical of the Alföld.
