Curepipe lies on the central plateau of Mauritius at more than 500 metres above sea level, which makes it one of the coolest and rainiest towns on the island. Its streets do not follow a strict grid. Instead they bend around gentle slopes, gardens and wooded plots, giving the map a relaxed, organic texture quite unlike the coastal towns.
The most striking shape is Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcanic crater close to the town centre, drawn as an almost perfect ring encircled by a road.
