Danai, also spelled Tanai, lies in the Hukawng Valley of northern Kachin State in Myanmar, one of the country's most remote lowland basins. On the map the town is compact and linear. It follows the main road and the course of the river, with forest and cleared land spreading out on every side.
The road through Danai follows the route of the Ledo Road, built by the Allies during the Second World War to link India with China. Today the valley is better known for amber and gold mining, and for the Hukaung Valley tiger reserve, one of the largest protected areas in Asia.

The historic wartime road passes through town as a long, steady line, linking the valley toward the Indian border in one direction and Myitkyina in the other.
