Dankov sits in the north of Lipetsk Oblast, on the upper course of the Don. From above, the river is the first thing you notice. It swings past the town in loose curves, with low floodplain on one side and the built-up area rising gently on the other. Beyond the last streets, the map opens into the long, even field pattern of the Central Russian Upland.
The town dates back to the Muscovite period, when a line of fortified settlements guarded the southern steppe frontier. That origin still shows in the map. A dense, regular core sits close to the river, and later housing districts, rail lines and industrial land spread outward. The contrast between the older blocks and the looser outskirts reads clearly in black and white.
