Dargaz lies in the far north of Razavi Khorasan province, close to the border with Turkmenistan. It sits in a valley among the ranges of the Kopet Dag, a line of mountains that separates the Iranian plateau from the Central Asian plains, and the town has long been a farming centre for the fertile land around it.
From above, Dargaz is a compact town with a clear centre and roads running out across the valley. The built-up area is surrounded by orchards and fields watered by streams from the mountains, and the map shows the lines of these irrigated plots around the town. Further out, the streets give way to the steeper, emptier ground of the ranges.
