Mashhad grew around a single point, the shrine of Imam Reza, and the map still shows it. The shrine complex forms a large, rounded precinct at the centre, encircled by a ring road and approached by avenues that lead straight toward it from every side. Beyond this core the city extends in a long band from northwest to southeast along the valley of the Kashaf River.
To the southwest rise the Binalood Mountains, and the newer districts climb gently toward their foothills along wide, straight boulevards. The Kashaf River runs to the north of the city, which has expanded steadily outward in more regular blocks. Parks and green corridors are threaded through the grid, and the shrine remains the fixed point every major road returns to.
Mashhad is Iran's second-largest city and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Muslim world, drawing many millions each year. It lies near the borders with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, and the tomb of the poet Ferdowsi stands in nearby Tus.
