Herāt lies in the fertile valley of the Hari River in western Afghanistan, an oasis surrounded by farmland and framed by mountains to the north. The river runs south of the city, and irrigation channels branching from it feed the gardens and fields around the urban area. On a map the city appears as a dense core set in a patchwork of cultivated land.
The old city has a remarkably clear plan: a nearly square area once enclosed by walls, divided into quarters by two main streets that cross near its centre. At its northern edge stands the citadel, Qala Ikhtiyaruddin, and inside the old city lies the Friday Mosque with its tiled courtyards. Later districts spread outward beyond the old walls.
For centuries Herāt was a major cultural centre on routes between Persia, Central Asia and India, and the minarets of the Musalla complex still rise in the north of the city.
