Darjeeling sits on a narrow ridge at about 2,000 metres in the eastern Himalaya of West Bengal, and its map is shaped by slope. The town stretches along the ridge line. Roads zigzag down the hillsides in hairpin bends, and paths and steps connect the levels in between. Around it, tea estates cover the hills in wide terraces cut by streams.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a narrow-gauge line recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, loops and zigzags up to the town, and its track can be traced on the map. The town is famous for its tea and for views of Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, which rises to the north on clear days.
