Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, occupies a long valley in the western Himalayas at more than 2,200 metres above sea level. The Wang Chhu river runs down the valley floor from north to south. The city stretches along its western bank and up the slopes, so the map is tall and narrow, with streets climbing the hillside in switchbacks.
It is a small capital by global standards, and an unusual one. Thimphu famously has no traffic lights, and a police officer directs vehicles at the main intersection from a decorated booth. North of the centre stands Tashichho Dzong, the fortress-monastery that houses the government and the central monastic body. On a ridge to the south, a giant seated Buddha statue overlooks the valley.
