Deçan lies in western Kosovo, where the flat Dukagjin plain meets the steep wall of the Accursed Mountains near the borders with Albania and Montenegro. The Lumbardhi i Deçanit river leaves the mountains through a narrow gorge just west of town. It then flows out across the plain and shapes the valley around it.
The town is best known for the Visoki Dečani Monastery, a fourteenth-century Serbian Orthodox monastery at the mouth of the gorge. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo. The walled complex and the forest around it sit a short distance from the town's compact streets.

The Visoki Dečani Monastery stands near the mouth of the gorge. Its enclosed grounds form a distinct shape on the boundary between the town and the forest.
Settlement on the plain
Houses and plots spread across the flat Dukagjin plain in a loose pattern. Long roads run between them to the fields and neighbouring villages.
