Dili is shaped by the ground it sits on. The city runs east to west in a long, thin band between the sea and a wall of hills just behind it, so on a map the streets press against the shoreline. A waterfront road traces the curve of the bay, and the neighbourhoods behind it thin out quickly as the terrain rises.
Dili is the capital of Timor-Leste, which regained its independence in 2002. To the east, a headland ends at the Cristo Rei statue that looks back across the bay. To the west, the Comoro River and the airport mark where the city gradually loosens. Atauro Island lies offshore to the north, across the strait.

At the eastern end of the bay a rocky headland carries the Cristo Rei statue. On the map it forms a distinct hooked point jutting into the sea.
